Central European University is seeking an experienced Director of Communications to lead the institution's branding and strategic communications. The Director of Communications develops and executes institutional communications strategy, working with units across the university to reach key audiences such as prospective students, partner institutions, alumni, donors and friends, employers and corporate partners, influencers and the general public. S/he oversees media relations, institutional website and social media content and management, video production, publications, visual identity and branding, photography and merchandise. The Director reports to the President and Rector and is a member of the university's senior staff. 

Duties and responsibilities:

  •  Develop and execute institutional communications strategy in close cooperation with university leadership 
  • Work closely with the President and Rector, the Provost and other university leaders, advising on communications planning for institutional-level new initiatives and major decisions 
  • Supervise a team of 10 communications and web development professionals 
  • Run the Communications Office as a content hub, producing content in the appropriate medium/format and disseminate it via the appropriate channels to reach target audiences mentioned above 
  • Participate in senior staff, administrative management-level, and other key staff groups working on implementation of the university's strategic plan 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with faculty and researchers in order to promote their expertise, publications, awards, teaching, and other achievements 
  • Present to various audiences (internal, Erasmus events, visitors, conferences) on strategic university communications and/or offer training to such groups 
  • Report to the Board of Trustees on communications strategy and achievements (3x/year) 
  • Manage personnel and non-personnel budgets for the Communications Office 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a management position in the communications field, either corporate or non-profit/education 
  • BA required, MA preferred, in any field 
  • Commitment to CEU's mission and demonstrated knowledge of the higher education environment in Hungary and Europe 
  • Experience developing and executing communications strategy 
  • Experience in some or all communications fields mentioned above: media relations, website management, content production, publications, video, branding, photography, merchandise 
  • Marketing experience, while not required, is an advantage 
  • Internal communications experience, while not required, is an advantage 
  • Ability to focus on strategic goals and translate that into practical implementation, delegating tasks and managing projects 
  • Energetic self-starter who can motivate a team of professionals 
  • Team player able to work with units across the institution to develop and implement communications strategy to maximum efficiency and impact 
  • Experience in measuring communications campaign impact via analytics (Google, social media, Meltwater, IMEDIA) 
  • Native or fluent English speaker required, knowledge of Hungarian and/or German an asset

Compensation

We offer a competitive salary, as well as a dynamic, supportive, and international academic environment. The initial contract is for one year with a possibility of renewal.
